RDS Storage Migration
Amazon RDS instances still using older storage types (gp2, io1) can be migrated to gp3 for better performance at a lower cost, similar to standalone EBS volumes.
Implementation Effort: Low - Estimated time: less than 30 minutes. Online storage type migration via API, no downtime required.
What We Detect
- gp2 to gp3 migration candidates -- RDS instances using gp2 storage where gp3 offers the same or better performance at a lower price
- io1 to gp3 migration candidates -- RDS instances using provisioned IOPS (io1) storage where gp3's included baseline performance is sufficient
Why It Matters
gp3 includes 3,000 IOPS and 125 MB/s throughput at no extra charge. Many RDS instances using gp2 or io1 are provisioned at or below these thresholds and are overpaying for equivalent performance. Storage type changes for RDS are online operations with no downtime.
Recommendations
- Review your RDS instance's IOPS requirements
- Modify the storage type to gp3 via the console or CLI
- For instances needing more than 3,000 IOPS, provision additional IOPS on gp3 at a lower price than io1
