EBS io1 to GP3 Migration

EBS io1 (Provisioned IOPS SSD) volumes are significantly more expensive than gp3 volumes. Many io1 volumes can be migrated to gp3 with equivalent or better performance at a fraction of the cost.

Why It Matters

gp3 volumes include 3,000 IOPS and 125 MB/s throughput at no extra charge. Many io1 volumes provisioned at or below these thresholds are paying a premium for performance that gp3 delivers by default.

Recommendations

1. Review the volume's IOPS requirements
2. Migrate to gp3 using the AWS Console or CLI -- this is an online operation with no downtime
3. If you need more than 3,000 IOPS on gp3, provision additional IOPS at a fraction of the io1 price
