AWS Cost Optimization Hub centralizes cost optimization recommendations from AWS Compute Optimizer and AWS Cost Explorer into a single view. It surfaces actionable recommendations across multiple resource types — including rightsizing, stopping idle resources, upgrading instances, migrating to Graviton, purchasing Savings Plans, and more.

Implementation Effort: Varies - Each recommendation includes its own effort estimate depending on the action type.

Prerequisites

Cost Optimization Hub is not enabled by default on AWS accounts. You must explicitly opt in before unusd.cloud can retrieve recommendations.

How to Opt In

  1. Open the AWS Cost Management Console
  2. Navigate to Cost Optimization Hub
  3. Click Opt in to enable the service
  4. If you are using AWS Organizations, the management account can opt in member accounts as well

Once opted in, AWS begins generating recommendations within 24-48 hours.

If Cost Optimization Hub is not opted in, unusd.cloud will silently skip this check — no findings will be generated and no errors will be reported.

What You Get

When Cost Optimization Hub is active, unusd.cloud surfaces all available recommendations alongside your existing findings. Each recommendation includes:

  • Resource identification and region
  • Action type — Rightsize, Stop, Upgrade, Delete, Scale In, Migrate to Graviton, Purchase Savings Plans/RIs
  • Current vs. recommended configuration
  • Estimated monthly savings and savings percentage
  • Implementation effort and operational impact (restart needed, rollback possible)
  • Cost efficiency score — an account-level metric measuring how effectively you're optimizing your cloud resources, tracked over time

Findings appear in the Analytics dashboard under the Cost Optimization category and link directly to the AWS Cost Optimization Hub console for further investigation.

Required IAM Permissions

The following read-only permissions are required in the spoke role:

- cost-optimization-hub:GetPreferences
- cost-optimization-hub:GetRecommendation
- cost-optimization-hub:ListEfficiencyMetrics
- cost-optimization-hub:ListEnrollmentStatuses
- cost-optimization-hub:ListRecommendationSummaries
- cost-optimization-hub:ListRecommendations

These permissions are included in the unusd.cloud spoke role template v1.3+.

Limitations

  • Enterprise Plan Required — This feature is available exclusively for Enterprise plan customers
  • Opt-in Required — Cost Optimization Hub must be explicitly enabled in the AWS account
  • Initial Delay — After opting in, it may take 24-48 hours for recommendations to appear
  • Spoke Role Version — Requires spoke role template v1.3 or later
